(Silhouettes) ORIGINAL PEN AND INK DRAWING FEATURING TWO AFRICAN AMERICANS IN SILHOUETTE; drawn by Dorothy Cox. [Red Oak, Iowa]: [Thos. D. Murphy Calendar Co.], [1933]. This original pen and ink drawing by Dorothy Cox, which measures 5-1/2" x 4-11/16" on a piece of art board which measures 8-1/2" x 5-1/2", was used on Thos. D. Murphy Calendar Co.'s "Old Man Ribber Series" of advertising calendars in 1934; this series featured wonderful silhouette drawings of African American adults and children with captions written in an unflattering, stereotypical Southern African American dialect. This drawing, which is named "Li'l Happy New Yeah", was used as the calendars' month of January illustration; signed by Cox on lower left; card lightly soiled. A salesman's sample of the published drawing, which measure 5" x 3-1/2" and is printed in black and silver is included with this offering; also included is a New Year's greeting card and envelope with the printed image affixed to the outside of the card; inside the card is a poem named "Li'l Happy New Yeah" written in the same stereotypical dialect referenced above; mounting residue on envelope; items are from the Thos. D. Murphy Calendar Co. archives. The condition of the original drawing is VERY GOOD. The condition of the salesman's sample and New Year's greeting card is FINE. # 000828
