(Black Panther Party) The Black Panther Black Community News Service, Vol. 2, No. 11, Saturday, November 2, 1968. San Francisco, CA: The Black Panther Party Ministry of Information, November 2, 1968. FIRST EDITION. Elephant folio - 17-1/2" x 11-3/8". 24 pp. The Black Panther Black Community News Service was a weekly newspaper published by the Black Panther Party between 1967-1980. Each issue featured a range of articles and op-eds on the activities of the Party, Black Power, police brutality, communism, party leadership, etc. The back of most issues featured revolutionary artwork by the graphic artist and Black Panther Minister of Culture, Emory Douglas.

The front page of this issue starts with a 4-panel cartoon by Emory [Douglas] with the first three panels showing a bullet progressing from left to right; these panels are labeled: 1) "To the Avaricious Businessman ...," 2) "Demagogue Politicians ...," and 3) "Pig Cops on the Beat ...;" panel 4) is labeled "Death" and shows the bullet fixing to pierce the skull of a pig. The headline reads "Apology Demanded of Pig Alioto" which is also illustrated by Emory [Douglas] and is followed by: "Editorial: By Raymond Lewis, Deputy Minister of Information" in which he reiterates Eldridge Cleaver's call for an apology from "San Francisco's pig Mayor" Alioto. Lewis finishes his piece with "The Black Panther Party is going to get an apology from Pig Alioto or the city of San Francisco won't be here to know it did not!"

Articles in this issue include: "Africans Say They Share Foes, Goals With China," a full page of "Black Revolutionary Poetry," "U.S. Open to Urban Guerrillas" by Robert Williams with revolutionary artwork by "Emory" and 4 illustrations after photographs of scenes of urban destruction, "Quotation From Kwane Nkrumah," and "Black Panther Party Book List" of 32 recommended titles from The Autobiography of Malcolm X to Native Son by Richard Wright.

Also in this issue are full page political ads for several members of the Black Panther Party: Eldridge Cleaver for President, Huey Newton for US Congressman, Bobby Seale for State Assemblyman and Kathleen Cleaver for State Assemblywoman; all illustrated with portraits after photographs.

The back page features a large portrait after a photograph of Malcolm X captioned "Brother Malcolm" placed between "Born May 19, 1925" to the top and "Assassinate February 21, 1965" below; the paper is age-tanned and folded as issued, with darkening along the horizontal fold on front page and vertical fold between front and back page and with heavy wear at the intersecting folds with small marginal losses to the first two sheets. The condition of the newspaper is VERY GOOD. # 001248
