(Black Panther Party) The Black Panther Black Community News Service, Vol. III, No. 21, Saturday, September 13, 1969. San Francisco, CA: The Black Panther Party Ministry of Information, September 13, 1969. FIRST EDITION. Elephant folio - 17-1/2" x 11-3/8". 24 pp. The Black Panther Black Community News Service was a weekly newspaper published by the Black Panther Party between 1967-1980. Each issue featured a range of articles and op-eds on the activities of the party, Black Power, police brutality, communism, party leadership, etc. The back of most issues featured revolutionary artwork by the Black Panther Minister of Culture, the graphic artist Emory Douglas. The front page of this issue features a photographic reproduction portrait of David Hilliard, the Black Panther Chief of Staff, over the bold caption "NEXT VICTIM OF FASCIST FRAMEUP?" Article titles in this issue include "On Revolutionary Culture" by Minister of Culture, Emory Douglas, "L.A. Pigs Vamp On Free Breakfast Program," "Fascism In The Land Of The Tree And The Home Of The Slave," "Handicapped Youth Murdered in Cold Blood," "Zionist Menace," "Kansas City Breakfast for School Children," "Black Marines Appeal Harsh Sentences for Speaking Out," and the cartoon "The Black Panther Fascist Funnies Presents The Rise and Fall of Mickey Mouse by Blood Brother;" the centerfold spread is titled "Sisters" and is the resulting article from when "we rapped with six women, members of the Black Panther Party, about some of the issues raised by the women's liberation movement and their own experiences with women's liberation inside the Black Panther Party." The back page features an illustration by Emory Douglas of a Black couple, the women wielding a military-style assault rifle and wearing a pin with the word "Seize The Time" on it, the man is in the process of throwing a hand grenade; paper is mildly age-tanned and folded as issued, with only very minor signs of the handling and wear that is the norm for these newspapers. The condition of the newspaper is NEAR FINE. This newspaper is in much better condition than one normally finds these in, and is VERY SCARCE as such. # 001225
