(Early English / Regency Toy Books / Satirical Verse) Hodge's Visit to the Gymnasium.

London: E. Wallis, 42, Skinner Street, Snow Hill, circa 1823 [paper watermarked 1823]. 12mo - 7-1/16" x 4-1/4". [12] leaves printed one side only. Original string-bound tan stiff paper wrappers. An appealing, remarkably well-preserved example of this scarce Regency-era juvenile satire, establishing a verified FIRST EDITION by the anonymous author of Paul Pry at a Party. Dedicated "to Grown-Up Babies of Both Sexes," the work is a brilliant example of early nineteenth-century popular humor, presented in the classic toy book format. The exterior features titles and a decorative border printed in black to the front wrapper, with a comprehensive publisher's advertisement and matching decorative border printed in black to the back wrapper. The front pastedown retains a contemporary gift inscription. Internally, the narrative unfolds through humorous letterpress verses describing various gymnastic exercises as witnessed—and thoroughly misunderstood—by Hodge, a simple country dweller during his trip to London. The text is sumptuously enhanced by eleven half-page hand-colored wood engravings of exceptional character, all of which remain in pristine state.

The physical condition of the item is graded VERY GOOD + (utilizing the standard antiquarian book grading scale for works on paper). The original tan stiff paper wrappers are structurally sound and firmly attached by the original string binding, showing moderate rubbing and light wear concentrated along the spine, alongside minor, scattered cosmetic soiling consistent with its age. Internally, the single-sided leaves are exceptionally crisp and clean, and the eleven hand-colored illustrations remain entirely bright, vivid, and without flaw.

Regency Satire, Physical Culture, and the Wallis Nursery Trade

Published during the height of the Regency period, this work captures a fascinating cultural moment: the rise of institutional gymnastics and physical training centers in London during the early 1820s. By filtering this urban phenomenon through the eyes of "Hodge"—the stereotypical rustic country bumpkin of English theater and satire—the author creates a double-edged parody that entertained both children and "grown-up babies." The publisher, Edward Wallis, was a master of this crossover juvenile market, specializing in heavily illustrated, hand-colored educational amusements. The production choice to print on one side only prevented the hand-applied water-based pigments from bleeding through and obscuring the typography on adjacent pages, a hallmark of premium nursery books of the era.

Series Bibliography, Census, and Market Scarcity

Ephemeral, string-bound pamphlets issued in simple paper wrappers represent the most vulnerable category of nineteenth-century children's literature, with the vast majority completely destroyed by generational nursery use. A current global sweep of the OCLC/WorldCat database locates only one specimen preserved in institutional special collections worldwide: held securely within the permanent archives of the Princeton University Library. The survival of a copy retaining its original wrappers, un-trimmed margins, and flawless original hand-coloring represents an extraordinary bibliographic survival of the highest rarity for the private market.

THIS EXCEEDINGLY RARE 1823 REGENCY TOY BOOK, FEATURING ELEVEN HAND-COLORED WOOD ENGRAVINGS, REPRESENTS A CRITICAL ACQUISITION FOR INSTITUTIONAL SPECIAL COLLECTIONS OR EXTRAORDINARY PRIVATE COLLECTIONS DEVOTED TO THE HISTORY OF EARLY ENGLISH CHILDREN'S LITERATURE, NINETEENTH-CENTURY SOCIAL SATIRE, OR THE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF EDWARD WALLIS.
