Color pictorial stiff card wrappers with titles and image of Tom Kitten standing before a canvas on an easel with paintbrush in hand to front wrapper, titles in white to spine, and color pictorial publisher's advertisement for "The Peter Rabbit Books By Beatrix Potter" with ten "First Series" titles and two "Second Series" titles listed to back wrapper. In original publisher's printed glassine dust jacket with price (One Shilling Net) to front panel and publisher's advertisement for other Potter titles and merchandise, e.g., "Peter Rabbit's Slippers: The 'Joy' Footwear For Tiny Feet," to both front and rear flaps. [20] leaves, including pastedown illustrations, printed on one side only. Illustrated with eight color plates from eight different Potter stories, each with a facing outline illustration intended to be painted or colored-in by the book's owner; all outline illustrations remain entirely uncolored as issued, with corresponding story text appearing below each illustration. The physical condition of the item is graded VERY GOOD + for the book and VERY GOOD - for the glassine jacket (utilizing the standard antiquarian book grading scale for works on paper). Wrappers exhibit light chipping to spine ends and a few minor marks to back wrapper. Printed glassine dust jacket exhibits minor fraying to edges, small chips to head and tail of spine, and a larger chip with some staining to back panel, while remaining nearly complete with all printing bright and legible. Internally in nearly pristine condition with completely uncolored plates.
Early Beatrix Potter Activity Book Design and Production
Published during the First World War in 1917, Tom Kitten's Painting Book represented Beatrix Potter's second interactive painting book project for Frederick Warne & Co., following her initial Peter Rabbit's Painting Book (1911). Designed to engage children's creative participation during wartime home leisure, the work cleverly recycled beloved visual assets from her core series—including scenes from The Tale of Tom Kitten, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and The Tale of Benjamin Bunny—paired alongside blank outline plates for hand-coloring. Surviving examples with the original printed glassine dust jacket intact are extraordinarily scarce, as these fragile unreinforced wrappers were routinely discarded upon opening or destroyed during juvenile use.

Because interactive activity books were inherently intended for childhood consumption and marking, the vast majority of copies were painted, heavily used, or physically deteriorated over time. An uncolored copy retaining its fragile publisher's printed glassine dust jacket represents a remarkable survival in twentieth-century children's literature.
