(L. Prang & Co.) publishers. THE LIVING FOREST. ANIMATION EVERY WHERE; CAN YOU SEE IT? [Prang Magic Card]. [Boston]: L. Prang & Co., (1865). 4-3/8" x 2-7/16". Civil War era stiff paper parlor game card, front side printed in black, back side blank; with a crease in lower right corner and light mounting residue on back for what is a nice example of one of these Magic Cards. From the "Key to the Magic Cards" which would have been included with the full set of twelve cards when they were originally purchased, but not included here, "[t]he Magic Cards have been devised for the entertainment of both young and old; every one involves an artistic problem, the solution of which is the main object. This Key should only be used to verify the solution arrived at, otherwise the principal part of the interest in these pictures will be annihilated." Spoiler Alert: the key to this card will now be partially revealed. "This apparently quite Forest Scene will, by close examination, become alive with all sorts of created beings. Beginning our examinations at the foot of the Picture, we first see a Rabbit, half hidden in surrounding shrubbery, and, for its safety, in rather close proximity to Master Fox, who certainly is calculating his prospects of a meal, based on the estimate of little Rabbit's probable age." The description of what else is to be found in this card continues for five additional run-on sentences. The condition of the card is VERY GOOD +. SCARCE # 000813
