du Bois, William Pene. THE THREE POLICEMEN, OR YOUNG BOTTSFORD OF FARBE ISLAND. New York: The Viking Press, 1938. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING ("First Published August 1938" on title page verso). 4to - 9-15/16" x 7-3/8". Light green cloth covered boards with an anchor and fish design printed in yellow to front cover and titles printed in yellow to spine with absolutely no wear at all but with a few tiny scattered spots of foxing to hinges on front and back covers and along upper edge close to spine on back cover for what is a beautiful copy of the book. Original publisher's priced ($2.00) color pictorial printed dust wrapper with light wear to the head and tail of spine, light rubbing and wear to front flap fold, and a 1" long closed tear and minor fraying to bottom edge of front panel for what is a very lovely copy of the dust wrapper. Color pictorial endpapers with a small bookseller's sticker (5/8" x 1-1/4") on back paste-down. 92 pp. This book, that was written and illustrated by du Bois when he was just 22 years old, is a mystery tale in which the ingenuity of 10 year old Bottsford enables the three policemen of Farbe Island, an idyllic fishing isle, to catch the thieves that have been stealing the islanders' fish and fishing nets; illustrated by du Bois with six full page color drawings; additional illustrations (full color or black and white) by du Bois within text throughout. The condition of the book is NEAR FINE. The condition of the dust wrapper is VERY GOOD +. # 000847
