Greenaway, Kate. SUSAN, MARY, EMILY: A SUPERB ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR DRAWING BY KATE GREENAWAY. [No place]: Kate Greenaway, circa 1880. The drawing depicts three girls standing in a field carpeted with daisies, with the branches of a fruit tree in full bloom overhead, and a house in the background; SIGNED WITH THE ARTIST'S INITIALS lower left. Drawing is matted to 7-5/16" x 9-7/16" within a frame measuring 14-1/2" x 16-1/2". An old catalog listing for the drawing stated, "On the backboard, faintly discernible, is a signature 'John Greenaway' [the artist's brother] and identification of the three girls depicted as 'Susan,' 'Mary' and 'Emily.' Mary was one of Kate Greenaway's favorite models." The condition of the drawing is FINE.
Note: A paste label (mount stamp) to back of framed work for "W. Holland / Frame Maker & Mount Cutter / 12, Sherwood St." William Holland was listed at this address during the years 1896-1914. "James McNeill Whistler was using Holland by 1896, when he described him as having 'laid down my water colour capitally' and he may also have employed Holland for framing, continuing until at least 1901 when Holland was paid 15 pounds (see The Correspondence of James McNeill Whistler)."
