(Illustration Art) ORIGINAL PEN AND INK DRAWING FEATURING A HIGH WHEEL BICYCLE FROM THE 1880S ABOVE A HAND-INKED MAXIM by W. S. Davis. [Red Oak, Iowa]: [Thos. D. Murphy Calendar Co.], [1938]. 10-1/2" x 8-1/2". This original pen and ink drawing by W. S. Davis was used on Thos. D. Murphy Calendar Co.'s advertising calendars and other advertising products in 1938 featuring various street scenes from the 1880's; this drawing features a man riding a high wheel bicycle or penny farthing while a young girl looks on from the porch of her house; below the drawing is the following hand-inked maxim for one to consider and hopefully take to heart: "The Wise Man Realizes That One In A High Position Must Beware Lest He Fall!" A penciled notation in the upper margin indicates this drawing was used as the calendars' March illustration; signed by Davis lower right of drawing. A salesman's sample of the published drawing on a 3-1/2" x 5-1/2" ink blotter is included with this offering; blotter with a single light vertical crease; items are from the Thos. D. Murphy Calendar Co. archives. The condition of the original drawing is FINE. The condition of the printed salesman's sample is VERY GOOD +. #000942
