(Silhouettes) ORIGINAL PEN AND INK DRAWING FEATURING AN AFRICAN AMERICAN MAN IN SILHOUETTE; drawn by Dorothy Cox. [Red Oak, Iowa]: [Thos. D. Murphy Calendar Co.], [1933]. This original pen and ink drawing by Dorothy Cox, which measures 5-1/4" x 4-3/8" on a piece of art board which measures 8-1/2" x 5-1/2", was used on Thos. D. Murphy Calendar Co.'s "Old Man Ribber Series" of advertising calendars in 1934; this series featured wonderful silhouette drawings of African American adults and children with captions written in an unflattering, stereotypical Southern African American dialect. This drawing, which is named "August Ebenin'", was used as the calendars' month of August illustration; signed by Cox on lower left; card lightly soiled. A salesman's sample of the published drawing, which measure 5" x 3-1/2" and is printed in black and silver is included with this offering; items are from the Thos. D. Murphy Calendar Co. archives. The condition of the original drawing and salesman's sample is NEAR FINE. # 000829
