Mayer, Henry "Hy". SIX ORIGINAL PEN AND INK DRAWINGS BY HENRY "HY" MAYER THAT WERE PUBLISHED IN ST. NICHOLAS MAGAZINE. New York: The Century Co., September, 1912. This offering is for a wonderful series of pen and ink drawings by "Hy" Mayer, each measuring 8" x 9-3/4", that were published in Vol. XXXIX, No. 11, of St. Nicholas: An Illustrated Magazine For Young Folks. These six drawings formed the entirety of what was a story told entirely without words title "The Magnetism of the Fishing Rod"; the story is absolutely hilarious and in no way suffers from the lack of words; drawings exhibit mild foxing; the final drawing is signed "Hy Mayer" at lower right.

Henry "Hy" Mayer was a magazine illustrator in Munich, Paris and London. In 1886 he emigrated to the United States where he illustrated a number of children's books. He was a political cartoonist for The New York Times from 1904, and then in 1914, he was the chief cartoonist of Puck. Additionally, he contributed artwork to early animated films and newsreels.

Included with the drawings in this offering is a fine set of Volume XXXIX of St. Nicholas Magazine where the six drawings offered here were originally published. This two book set is bound in the original publisher's deluxe red cloth covered boards with decoration and titles stamped in black and gilt to front cover and spine. Additionally, Volume XXXIX of St. Nicholas Magazine contains two early articles on baseball, "How I Became a Big-League Pitcher" by Christy Mathewson, and "How to Play the Game", both of which are illustrated with multiple diagrams and photographs and is eagerly sought out by collectors. The condition of the drawings range from VERY GOOD to NEAR FINE. The condition of the books is FINE. Additional postage will be requested due to the weight of these items. # 000827
