(Toy and Movable Books) Surprise Pictures From Fairy Land (code no. 1861); verses by Clifton Bingham. London: Ernest Nister; New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., circa 1907. FIRST EDITION. 4to - 10-1/16" x 7-3/8". Brown cloth backed color pictorial glazed paper covered boards with titles printed in red above a central oval picture of the Sleeping Beauty on a couch, with fading to the cloth spine, scattered rubbing/wear to the extremities, overall soiling with a small dampstain to the front cover and a larger dampstain to the back cover for what remains a nice, tightly bound copy of the book. Original white with green leaf pattern endpapers in lovely condition with a seller's sticker from the historically significant, G. A. Schwarz toy company, 1006 Chestnut St., Philadelphia affixed to center of rear paste-down. [16] pp., including [6] movable (flap) pictures in color. The book contains the following six stories told in verse: Red Riding Hood; Humpty Dumpty; Little Bo-Peep; Hey! Diddle Diddle; Old Mother Hubbard; The Three Bears; stories printed on versos along with black and white line drawings within text; opposing rectos with full color, triple-action flap movable illustrations corresponding to the stories on the opposing versos; movables are operated by tabs at the bottom of the illustrations, as a tab is pulled down, the first illustration flaps up revealing a second color picture, further pulling of the tab reveals a third color picture illustrating the story; color movables all within elaborate duo-tone border designs. All movables are bright and clean and in perfect working condition. Text pages are age-tanned with darkest toning around the edges and with minimal light spotting; also there is a short closed tear around two of the pull tabs.
