(Black Panther Party) The Black Panther Black Community News Service, Vol. II, No. 9, Saturday, October 19, 1968. Oakland, Calif.: The Black Panther Party, October 19, 1968. FIRST EDITION. Elephant folio - 17-1/2" x 11-3/8". 20 pp. The Black Panther Black Community News Service was a weekly newspaper published by the Black Panther Party between 1967-1980. Each issue featured a range of articles and op-eds on the activities of the Party, Black Power, police brutality, communism, party leadership, etc. The back of most issues featured revolutionary artwork by the graphic artist and Black Panther Minister of Culture, Emory Douglas.
The headline on the front page of this issue reads: "Black Liberation Struggle Shows Progress" which is followed by the start of an article concerning "Chairman Mao's great statement points out direction of struggle of the Black people of the United States;" following this is revolutionary artwork by Emory [Douglas] of a Black man armed with an assault rifle, and a second Black man in the background that has just shot a pig in the head.
Articles in this issue include: "Palestine Guerrillas," "Che Guevara on Vietnam," "Position Paper #1 on Revolutionary Art by the Minister of Culture, Emory Douglas," "Seattle Pigs Murder Panther," and "D.C. Pigs Murder Panther."
Also in this issue are full page political ads for several members of the Black Panther Party: Eldridge Cleaver for President, Huey Newton for US Congressman, Bobby Seale for State Assemblyman and Kathleen Cleaver for State Assemblywoman; all illustrated with portraits after photographs.
The back page is a blank petition with 25 lines to be filled in with the name, address, city, state and country of 25 people; the petition headline reads: "1,000,000 Signatures for Eldridge ... Petition: Keep Eldridge Cleaver out of Prison ...;" the paper is slightly age-tanned and folded as issued, with a single tiny abrasion/paper flaw to front page and a tiny spot of wear at the intersecting folds. The condition of the newspaper is NEAR FINE. IN MUCH BETTER CONDITION THAN ONE NORMALLY FINDS THESE IN AND RARE AS SUCH. # 001247
