(Black Panther Party) THE BLACK PANTHER BLACK COMMUNITY NEWS SERVICE, VOL. IV, NO. 22, SATURDAY, MAY 9, 1970. San Francisco, CA: The Black Panther Party Ministry of Information, May 9, 1970. FIRST EDITION. Elephant folio - 17-1/2" x 11-3/8". 24 pp. The Black Panther Black Community News Service was a weekly newspaper published by the Black Panther Party between 1967-1980. Each issue featured a range of articles and op-eds on the activities of the party, Black power, police brutality, communism, party leadership, etc. The back of most issues featured revolutionary artwork by the graphic artist and Black Panther Minister of Culture, Emory Douglas. The front page of this issue features a photographic image of a dilapidated house with the caption "We believe that if the White landlords will not give decent housing to our Black community, then the housing and the land should be made into cooperatives so that our community, with government aid, can build and make decent housing for its people." The centerfold heading reads "When the Pigs Come to the Height of Their Fascist Tactics, the People Will Rise and Start the Babylonian Revolution;" this is illustrated with photographic reproductions of scenes with heavy police presence with rifles at the ready; a partial list of articles on this page are: "An Attack Against the Panthers is an Attack Against All Black People" and "Press Release: Black Panther Party National Headquarters;" additional articles include: "Fascist Punks Attack Our Youth," "U.S. Imperialism Stop Butchering Black Militants" and "Organizing Self-Defence Groups: Part 6 on Revolvers;" the latter being a step-by-step guide to the proper handling, firing and care of one's handgun. The back page artwork by Emory Douglas features a Black man armed with a military style rifle aimed directly at a policeman; this image is captioned with a revolutionary slogan; Black Panther logo of a pouncing black panther printed in lower margin; the paper is lightly age-tanned and folded as issued, with light rubbing along horizontal fold of front page, minor wear at head and tail of spine fold and a light dampstain at upper edge of front page, but with none of the heavy wear and tear that is the norm for these newspapers. The condition of the newspaper is VERY GOOD +. No copies located on WorldCat. RARE # 001173
