(Rackham, Arthur) illustrator. Goldsmith, Oliver. The Vicar of Wakefield. Philadelphia: David McKay Company, [1929]. LIMITED EDITION; "Edition limited to Five Hundred and Seventy-five copies for England and Two Hundred copies for the United States, of which this is No. 159 of the American issue." Signed by Arthur Rackham on the limitation page. 4to - 10-9/16" x 8". White vellum covered boards with triple-line border and titles stamped in gilt to front cover and decoration and titles stamped in gilt to spine with a single tiny abrasion, a few tiny spots of discoloration and slight bow to the boards for what is a bright, clean copy of the book. Gray and white pictorial endpapers designed by Rackham. T.E.G.; others untrimmed. 231 pp. Oliver Goldsmith's 1766 novel which lampooned literary conventions of the day, e.g., pastoral scenes, artificial romance and the hero's stoic bravery, is illustrated by Arthur Rackham with [12] full page color plates and twenty-two drawings in black and white, both full page and within text. Internally the book is bright and clean with no foxing and no extraneous marks or smudges; slight waviness to the text block as is not uncommon with these deluxe Rackham editions. The condition of the book is NEAR FINE. A beautiful copy of the book. # 001208
